Country Artist Will Top Album Chart for Second Consecutive Week, Third Eye Blind, Ledisi, Sean Paul Debut
August 19, 2009
The dog days of summer have officially arrived.
For the first time since his death, two weeks will pass with an act other than Michael Jackson topping the HITS Album chart.
With one-day reports from those retailers who haven’t turned their record stores into massage parlors, Valory Music Group’s Reba McEntire gives Scott Borchetta's Big Machine machine a #1 bow, with between 90-100k for her new album, Keep on Loving You. After this week’s George Strait debut, that means country albums have had consecutive chart-topping bows.
Third Eye Blind's latest, on indie Megacollider, should do a robust 40-50k, with a heavy iTunes presence, while Verve Forecast's Ledisi, upset Best New Artist Grammy nominee several years back, returns with a new album, Turn Me Loose, that should do between 23-27k.
Finally, veteran VP/Atlantic Records dance hall/reggae artist Sean Paul will do between 20-23k for his new album, Imperial Blaze, and Warner Bros.' Mute Math should sell in the 15-20k range, while Victory's OTEP and Emmure will each debut with around 12-15k.
The market was down 2% vs. last week, down 20% vs. same week last year (when Jonas Brothers debuted at #1 with 525k) and still down 14% year to date. Excuse us, while we go disrupt a town hall meeting.

Reba McEntire talks about her 25th album, new sitcom and love of Canada
TORONTO - Flame-haired country legend Reba McEntire co-wrote one track on her new disc: "She's Turning 50 Today," a tale of a jilted wife who hits the road in search of a new life on her 50th birthday.
McEntire's protagonist finds hope on the other side of a breakdown. But the 54-year-old McEntire said that for her, reaching the half-century mark was nothing but a positive experience.
"I was thrilled to death to be hitting 50," McEntire told The Canadian Press over the phone from her house in Mexico. "I've got friends and family members who never got to see 50 years old. So when I turned 50, (husband) Narvel (Blackstock) threw three parties for me - one in L.A., one in Oklahoma and one in Nashville, and I celebrated for all the friends and family members who never got to see 50 years old."
"I'm a celebrator. The alternative (to turning 50) is not good."
Indeed, McEntire appears to be thriving.
On Tuesday, she'll release "Keep on Loving You," her 25th studio album (the title, she says, was chosen because this year marks her 20th wedding anniversary). The record's first single, the hard-twangin' anthem "Strange," reached No. 11 on the Billboard country charts in Canada and the U.S.
And while her Emmy-nominated sitcom "Reba" closed its six-season run in 2007, McEntire hasn't lost interest in television. She says she's working on developing a new sitcom, though the project is still in "very rough stages" at this point.
If "Keep on Loving You" is a hit, it shouldn't come as a surprise - every McEntire record since 1986's "Whoever's in New England" has been certified platinum in the United States. But McEntire says it occasionally takes some nimble footwork to stay relevant while sating longtime fans.
"That's the thing that you really have to watch - you don't want to leave what has been successful to you for the last 30 years, but you still want to stay up to date and contemporary," she said. "It's the musicians, it's that edge that you put on it to sound contemporary. "
"You wanna keep everybody happy who's been with you, but also to gain new fans."
While "Keep on Loving You" is unlikely to turn off many of McEntire's longtime followers, her first solo record in six years does find the singer incorporating rock influences that continue beyond the crunchy electric guitars of disc opener "Strange."
"Just When I Thought I'd Stopped Loving You" features a jagged electric guitar riff, while the sassy "I Want a Cowboy" rides a funky acoustic guitar hook.
The second single from the record is a more traditional McEntire ballad, "Consider Me Gone," which she says she'll perform at the Canadian Country Music Association awards in Vancouver next month.
McEntire said she it didn't take long for her to accept the invitation to make her first CCMAs appearance.
"Well first, Canada's been so good to me, all the time, ever since we first started touring in the early '80s, you have always been so nice to me," she said.
"And to get to come up for the awards in Vancouver - one of the most gorgeous places in the entire world - who wouldn't want to do that?"
McEntire zeroes in on one specific memory when discussing her trips north of the border.
"One time when we were touring around Calgary, we went up to Banff, my mama and my older sister, Alice, was with us on the bus," she said. "We went to Lake Louise, and up around Banff, and just had a wonderful time."
"They said it was one of the most memorable vacations they've ever taken."

It's Reba Time!
Talking with Reba McEntire, you hear the Oklahoma drawl and her honesty. When she tells you she is so proud of Keep On Loving You, her first album in six years, you know it's true. And when you listen to the album, there's not a doubt in your mind that Reba personally chose each and every song and that she could give you a reason why.
One of the things you'll find on the album is a song she co-wrote titled "She's Turning 50 Today." She's singing to the women of Middle America who loved her in her 20s, 30s and 40s -- women who will never become fickle. They still have Reba's picture on their wall, even if it is a black-and-white photo like the one by my computer with Reba and Brooks & Dunn with producers Tony Brown and Tim DuBois. We don't change. We don't even change pictures.
Some people say she's had Botox or a facelift. Maybe so, but if she has, I can't tell. Her hair's still red, her eyes still blue and she never tried to enlarge what lips God gave her. She's still Reba. Early on, her hair got bigger and curlier, but when the style changed, Reba went with it. I hated it at first, but now I like her hair almost as much as her music and the woman she is.
The lady who grew up as a barrel rider at rodeos and worked like a field hand on her daddy's ranch can pretty much call her career shots these days -- and she definitely does call her life shots. She's happy with her son, Shelby, and is still in love with her handsome husband, Narvel Blackstock, who also is her manager. The two of them look ahead and plan for tomorrow.
Thinking ahead drew Reba to the Valory Music Co. It's a new label headed by Scott Borchetta, who worked with her at MCA Records and helped her earn more than a dozen No. 1 singles during his tenure there. Reba loves Scott's enthusiasm and that of his great team, making it feel like it's a family reunion. Plus Sandi Spika-Borchetta, who is married to Scott, worked as a clothes, hair and makeup stylist for Reba until the singer left for New York to star in the Broadway production of Annie Get Your Gun.
Reba was once known for her lavish concert productions, but she says she will no longer work herself to death by changing clothes 15 times during a concert. "Four times is plenty," she allows, and I agree. Besides the recording and performing, she has the Reba Collection of clothes, shoes and household items at Dillard's.
With 55 million album sold, she's outdone all the females in country music, but she's still looking for new mountains to climb.

COUNTRY
Rebe McEntire Keep On Loving You
Valory Music Co.
ESSENTIAL "She's Turning 50 Today''
Performed by anyone else, "Strange,'' the ready-and-raring first single from Reba McEntire's new and 31st album, would make you pity the protagonist whose man has just left her. But this is Reba McEntire, so instead of a hanky she's waving a victory flag. "Strange, I oughta be in bed with my head in the pillow cryin'/ Over us/ But I ain't/ Ain't love strange,'' she sings with serious attitude on the defiant chorus.
The song, with the top of the country charts dead in its sights, is a snapshot of McEntire's mindset on "Keep on Loving You'': No matter how bad it gets, her sass and her spirit keep her afloat. It's a sturdy and at times exuberant country album with big production and McEntire's even bigger voice leading the charge on low-key ballads ("I Keep on Lovin' You''), rocking kiss-offs ("Strange''), and her signature story songs about ordinary lives ("Maggie Creek Road'').
Only a few of these songs ("But Why,'' "Over You'') feel faceless, the kind of power ballads that could be hits for McEntire, or Martina McBride, or Faith Hill. Of course, this being a radio-friendly record, there's the requisite tip of the cowboy hat to spitfire women who buck the odds ("Pink Guitar'') and rugged, downhome men ("I Want a Cowboy'').
Tellingly, "She's Turning 50 Today,'' the sole song that really aims for the heart and the head, is the only one where McEntire gets a co-writing credit. It's classic Reba, from premise (a woman at the crossroads on her birthday) to resolution (she's going to be just fine, thank you). (Out tomorrow) JAMES REED

Reba McEntire’s Secret to Flat Abs
Since she first appeared on the country charts 33 years ago, Reba McEntire’s changed her hair and her wardrobe - but one thing has never changed — her trim figure.
According to Cincinnati’s examiner.com, Reba stays in shape by training with Pilates expert and personal fitness trainer, Risa Sheppard. The site reports that Reba does "the hundred," a basic Pilates exercise, almost daily, which sculpts abdominal muscles, flattens the stomach and strengthens the back.
Risa tells the site that Reba also performs a variety of flexibility moves because she tends to "tighten up" when she travels. "Stretching her hamstrings and lower back can be challenging, [but] she knows if she doesn’t do it daily she will pay the price!" she says.
What does Reba eat to stay healthy? Risa says the superstar drinks lots of water, and "for breakfast, a poached egg and toast for light protein and carb to help her through the day. For lunch, it’s a hearty salad with lots of vegetables and maybe some fish on top. For dinner, she enjoys a meal of chicken or fish, along with plenty of vegetables and a salad. She loves fruit for dessert, and if she cheats, it's with some cookies."
